Plant and Apparatus Construction

Titanium and Zirconium in Plant and Apparatus Construction

Titanium and zirconium have become indispensable in plant and apparatus construction due to their unique material properties. Both metals offer excellent corrosion resistance, even in demanding environments with high temperatures and aggressive chemicals. Titanium is frequently used in the chemical industry and in oil and gas production plants, as it is resistant to both salty environments and strong acids and bases. The strength-to-weight ratio makes titanium ideal for structures that must be both durable and lightweight.

Zirconium, on the other hand, is preferred for special applications where the highest corrosion resistance is required, such as in the production of heat exchangers and reactors. It shows excellent resistance to corrosion in acids such as hydrochloric and sulfuric acid and is particularly stable in high-temperature areas.

Together, titanium and zirconium in plant and apparatus construction provide ideal conditions for durable, safe, and efficient plant components. Companies that prioritize the highest reliability and quality can benefit from tailored solutions that withstand the specific requirements of their production processes.

The various grades of titanium used in plant and apparatus construction include both pure titanium grades such as Titanium Grade 1, Titanium Grade 2, Titanium Grade 4, Titanium Grade 7, and Titanium Grade 11, as well as alloyed variants such as Titanium Grade 5 and Titanium Grade 9 (according to ASTM B265, ASTM B348, DIN 17850, VdTÜV WB 230, PED 2014/68/EU). The choice of material depends on the required load-bearing capacity and environmental conditions. Alloyed titanium is commonly used in corrosive environments or under high load, for example in heat exchangers, pressure vessels, and piping, while pure titanium is often used for applications requiring high corrosion resistance and mechanical load-bearing capacity.

Titanium and Zirconium Semi-Finished Products for Plant and Apparatus Construction

Whether sheets, plates, bars, pipes, or other semi-finished products made of titanium or zirconium; HWN Titan stocks titanium and zirconium semi-finished products in a variety of grades across over 3000 square meters of storage space. Additionally, with our service center and extensive partner network, we can quickly produce cut parts such as discs and rings, as well as components made to drawing.
